Mini split installation cost

When a mini split makes sense

  • Homes without ducts (radiators, baseboard, older houses)
  • Additions, garages, finished basements and sunrooms
  • Rooms that are always too hot or cold
  • Replacing window units with a quiet, efficient system

Most mini splits are heat pumps, so they also heat. For unit prices by brand, see Ductless mini split cost: unit prices by brand; for several rooms, see Multi-zone mini split cost.

How to get a fair quote

  • Get at least three written quotes that list the brand, model number, size (tons or BTU) and efficiency rating.
  • Ask whether the price includes permits, removal of the old unit, refrigerant, a new thermostat and any duct or electrical work.
  • Ask for a load calculation (Manual J) instead of matching the old unit's size by default.
  • Compare labor warranties (1 to 10 years) as well as the manufacturer's parts warranty, and register the equipment.
  • Schedule non-urgent work in spring or fall, when contractors are less busy and more willing to discount.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install a mini split?

About $2,500 to $6,000 for a single-zone system, including the outdoor unit, one indoor head and installation.

How much does a 12,000 BTU mini split cost installed?

About $3,500 to $5,000 for a 1-ton (12,000 BTU) single-zone system.

Can I install a mini split myself?

DIY-friendly kits with pre-charged line sets exist, but most systems need an EPA-certified technician to handle refrigerant, and DIY installs may void warranties.
