Home AC recharge cost

Recharging a home air conditioner costs $100 to $320 for systems that use R-410A refrigerant and $180 to $600 for older systems that use R-22 Freon, about $225 on average. Large systems that are badly undercharged cost more.

Why you shouldn't just recharge

A sealed AC system doesn't use up refrigerant. If it's low, there's a leak. Recharging without repairing it means paying again next summer, and EPA rules require technicians to handle refrigerant properly. Budget for leak repair ($200 to $1,500). For R-22 systems, replacement is often smarter than repeated recharges.

How to get a fair quote

  • Get at least three written quotes that list the brand, model number, size (tons or BTU) and efficiency rating.
  • Ask whether the price includes permits, removal of the old unit, refrigerant, a new thermostat and any duct or electrical work.
  • Ask for a load calculation (Manual J) instead of matching the old unit's size by default.
  • Compare labor warranties (1 to 10 years) as well as the manufacturer's parts warranty, and register the equipment.
  • Schedule non-urgent work in spring or fall, when contractors are less busy and more willing to discount.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to recharge a home AC?

About $100 to $320 for an R-410A system and $180 to $600 for an R-22 system, with an average around $225.

How often does an AC need a recharge?

Never, if it has no leaks. Needing refrigerant means there's a leak to fix.

Can I buy R-22 refrigerant?

Only reclaimed or stockpiled R-22 is available, it's expensive, and only EPA-certified technicians can buy and handle it.
